Gliders
have none of the noise or smells associated with powered aircraft,
but have the same controls and are flown in much the same way. Many
of the aerobatics that are displayed at air shows can be achieved
with a glider. For training, we use two-seater aircraft fitted with
dual controls and instrumentation, so with a qualified instructor
you can enjoy the experience of silent flight in absolute safety.
We launch using a static winch that tows the aircraft to a height
of 1,000 feet or more. If the weather conditions are suitable, they
can then be flown for several hours across the countryside using
rising air to maintain height. In this way flights of 200 miles
or more can be achieved.

We
fly every weekend throughout the year, weather permitting.

The
club is run by the members which ensures that costs are kept low.
We have a fleet of four two-seat
gliders and four single-seat gliders housed in our own hangar on
the airfield, together with many of the member's own gliders which
they have bought as syndicates and share the flying.
Our
instructors are qualified by the British Gliding Association and
as a member there is no extra charge for instruction, you just pay
for your time in the air and the launch fee. Before you fly solo,
we teach you how to take off and land safely and how to control
the aircraft proficiently in the air. Once this is mastered, we
teach you how to soar. This will enable you to use the sun 's energy
to gain height and stay airborne for many hours. When your instructor
considers you have reached a certain level of proficiency, you will
be allowed to fly solo and convert to one of the club's single-seat
aircraft. From then on there are many goals to aim for, but gliding
can be whatever you make of it - a hobby to be enjoyed on fine weekends,
or a sport where your flying and navigational skills will be tested
against other pilots.
